RamKids Overview and Eligibility

RamKids is a federally-funded mentor, leadership and education program at the University of Mobile dedicated to identifying, recruiting, and supporting students who are determined to succeed academically. Applicants must be low-income, come from a single parent home, and minority. This program serves students from any public high school in Mobile County.

Our goal is to prepare students for college, both academically and socially. We will provide assistance with the application process for college, and financial aid to the University of Mobile. College preparatory classes will be offered during the summer residential program.

Workshops are offered during the academic year and the summer residential program in topics such as test-taking skills, study skills, time management, peer relations, leadership training, ACT preparation, reading for retention, and goal-setting. Academic tutoring is offered throughout the year.

Participants are given a chance to experience life on a college campus, attend theatrical productions, visit local businesses, job shadow professionals in their field of interest, dine at restaurants, and travel to large cities, historical areas, and beaches. Many of our participants have not traveled extensively, so our trips are academically and culturally broadening and enriching. During their participation in the program, students will have an opportunity to visit historic areas on a local, statewide, regional, and/or national level.
