Board of Directors

The UMAA Board of Directors oversees the Alumni Association’s efforts to engage, advance and support the campus community and its alumni and students through a variety of programs, services and awards, as well as opportunities for volunteerism and advocacy. As the Alumni Association’s governing body, the Board is composed of alumni whose demonstrated services and leadership display a strong understanding and commitment to our mission.

Board members serve two-year terms beginning July 1, and officers are elected on a yearly basis. The Board meets quarterly, while the Officers maintain monthly meetings. A Note from the Chairman

University of Mobile Class of 1998

The University of Mobile has been part of my life since childhood. Both of my parents are Mobile College graduates and my mother, Dr. Kathy Sheppard ’85, is a longtime faculty member in the School of Nursing. I fondly remember summer basketball camps at Pharr Gym, where I won the free-throw event for the first time! I recall running errands for my mom, visiting with the late Dr. Rosemary Adams, and always feeling like part of the university family. It’s no wonder that I chose the University of Mobile for my college experience!

Now I have the opportunity to continue that experience. As your 2013-14 chairman of the Alumni Board of Directors, I am part of a group of alumni who are working to keep you connected to the place that still impacts all of us. Throughout the year, your Alumni Board of Directors serves as a liaison between alumni and the university – representing your wishes as the university continues to grow, communicating all the great things happening on campus, and creating events that bring our alumni family together.

My own memories of being a Homecoming Maid, serving as Class President, and founding the Alpha Beta Chi science club and being its first president are special to me. I am sure you can easily name memories of your own that had a significant impact on your life. My roots at UMobile prepared me for graduate study, and I am thankful for the time that the faculty spent preparing me to be successful in areas I never saw myself pursuing. I realized the faculty’s belief in me was validated two years ago when I was selected as Mobile County’s High School Teacher of the Year.

I owe a great deal of gratitude to each faculty and staff member, coach, basketball player, donors who helped fund scholarships and programs, and so many others for the time and love of Christ they bestowed on me over the years. Being involved as an alumnus in the life of the University of Mobile is one way I say “Thank you.”

I encourage you to take advantage of the many ways to give back to the university that has played such a big role in shaping who you are today. Stay connected through alumni events like Ram Run 5k, the UMobile Golf Classic and the annual Leadership Banquet. Get involved on campus, cheer at athletic events, support the music program, volunteer in the annual Project Serve community-wide day of service, and give to the University of Mobile Fund.

Board Qualifications

  • Alumnus must have actively participated in the UMAA for one year and demonstrated involvement, interest, support, and commitment to the University.
  • Alumnus must have exemplified a life that is in line with the beliefs and standards held by the University of Mobile as a Christian Institution.
  • Alumnus must live within fifty miles of the University of Mobile.

Board Responsibilities

  • Attend all quarterly scheduled Board meetings
  • Attend special meetings called by the President or the Director of Alumni Relations, as able
  • Attend and participate in the preparation or facilitation of any UMAA sponsored activities
  • Serve on standing Association committee
  • Support the Annual Fund with at least one annual financial gift
  • Adhere to the bylaws of the Association
  • Identify and cultivate volunteer leaders and financial support for the Association
