MOBILE, Ala-- The University of Mobile women's basketball team opened the 2011-12 season with a 73-66 victory over NCAA-II Stillman College Saturday afternoon.
Briana Edwards led Mobile with 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting, while Alice Honnery added 16 points and 14 rebounds, and Courntey Bayliss finished with 14 points for Mobile thanks to hitting four 3-pointers.
Mobile out shot Stillman 41% to 35% and finished 14-of-27 at the free throw line, compared to a 3-for-7 effort at the charity stripe from the visitors.
Morgan Melancon finished with 8 points and 8 assists for Mobile.
Mobile was down 17-21 with 5:36 left in the opening half, but Mobile answered with a 9-0 run, capped by 3-pointers from Allison Michael and Bayliss. Mobile eventually took a 32-29 lead into the break.
The second half was all Mobile, as the Lady Rams opened the half with a 13-5 run to build a 45-34 lead with 15:41 left on a bucket from Edwards. Stillman used a late 7-0 lead to cut Mobile's advantage to 69-66 with 1:00 remaining, but the Lady Rams scored the last four points to clinch the win.
Mobile (1-0) visits Freed-Hardeman Nov. 12 at 1 pm.
