Rams Earn Several SSAC Honors

MOBILE, Ala-- The 5th-ranked University of Mobile men's soccer team racked up postseason honors with the release of the 2011 SSAC Men's Soccer All-Conference Team and year-end awards.

The nation's leading goal scorer Deshorn Brown was named the SSAC Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year for the second-straight season, while Michael Azira was named SSAC Newcomer of the Year, and Roy Patton was tabbed SSAC Men's Soccer Coach of the Year.

Also, joining Azira and Brown on the All-Conference Team were Chris Dillon and Stephen Okai, while Sam Blackburn was named to the All-Conference 2nd-Team. Gunnar Steindorsson was named All-Freshman.

Only a sophomore, Brown leads the NAIA with 32 goals, and has 3 assists to give him 67 points on the season. He has also knocked home home 10 game-winners. Azira, a transfer from Lindsey Wilson, has played every game in the midfield for the Rams and has contributed 2 goals and 4 assists.

Chris Dillon has captained a defense that has 13 shutouts on the season, while Okai has chipped in 6 goals and 11 assists from his midfield spot.

Blackburn leads the team with 14 assists, to go along with 6 goals, while Steindorsson has 6 goals and 3 assists on the year.

In his first year at the helm of the UMobile men's soccer program, Patton has guided the Rams to a 16-2-1 mark and No. 5 ranking in the NAIA Men's Soccer Coaches' Top-25 Poll. The team's season ended in the conference semifinals in a double-overtime loss to the Warhawks.

Patton and his Rams will earn a host bid to the Round of 16 at the 2011 NAIA Men's Soccer National Championships Nov. 28 - Dec. 3 at the Orange Beach Sportsplex in Orange Beach, Ala.

Justin Dillenschneider was also named the team's Musco Lighting Champions of Character award winner, while Xavier Audergon, Azira, Blackburn, Alex Swan and Tajay Higgins were named to the All-Academic Team.
