PENSACOLA, Fla-- The University of Mobile women's basketball team fell 70-73 at NCAA-II University of West Florida Tuesday evening.
Mobile (1-2) will visit Southern Poly University Friday, Nov. 18 at 5:30 pm.
Alice Honnery led Mobile with 16 points, 19 rebounds and 7 blocks, while Courtney Bayliss added 11 points and Morgan Melancon finished with 10 points and 4 assists.
Hanna Vette led the Lady Argos with 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting, while Sher'Ryan Scott added 18 points on 9-of-15 shooting.
West Florida out shot Mobile 43% to 42%, while Mobile went 10-for-27 from 3-point range, compared to 4-of-11 for the Lady Argos. Mobile had 22 turnovers versus 13 for West Florida.
After the teams traded buckets to begin, West Florida grabbed a 6-4 lead on a Vette jumper and held the lead the rest of the half. Mobile closed within 19-17 with 10:49 left on a 3-pointer from Allison Michael, but the Lady Argos went on a 16-4 run to take a 35-21 lead with 1:45 left as Mobile had nine turnovers in that stretch. Mobile did rally to cut the deficit to 35-28 at the break.
Mobile then scored the first 10 points of the final period to grab a 38-35 lead with 16:35 remaining thanks to a 3-pointer from Melancon. The Lady Rams kept that momentum and held a 60-56 lead with 7:15 remaining on a Honnery bucket, but West Florida answered right back to take a 61-60 lead with 6:22 left and never trailed. The Lady Rams tied it at 65-65 with 4:37 left, but went 2:55 before their next points and West Florida had built their own four-point lead by then.
