MOBILE, Ala-- The University of Mobile women's basketball team fell 49-59 in non-conference action to Concordia College-Selma Friday evening at Pharr Gym.
Mobile (3-7) will next play Southern Nazarene Wednesday, Dec. 28 at 4 pm in Bethany, Okla.
Courtney Bayliss was Mobile's lone double-digit scorer, finishing with 11 points on 3-of-5 shooting from 3-point range. Next highest was Briana Edwards' 9-point effort.
Concordia, on the other hand, got a balanced effort from its team, with four players tallying double figures. Rahida Young led with 15 points and 12 boards, while Temperance Jacobs finished with 13 points and 14 rebounds.
Each team turned the ball over 20 times and Mobile shot 38% from the floor, compared to 39% for the Lady Hornets. The difference came in the paint, where Concordia nearly doubled up Mobile on the glass, finishing the game with a 45-23 edge in rebounds and a 17-4 edge in offensive boards.
The Lady Rams jumped ahead 5-0 early and built an 18-12 lead on a Bayliss bucket with 8:40 remaining. Concordia answered with a 10-5 run to grab its first lead of the contest, 22-21 with 4:28 remaining. The teams traded baskets the rest of the half, with Concordia taking a 27-25 lead into the break on a bucket from Malahia Chandler.
Mobile never saw the lead again. Lauren Bethly went 1-for-2 from the charity strip just 35 seconds into the final half to pull Mobile within 26-27, but an 8-2 Lady Hornet surge made it 35-28 Concordia. An Allison Michael 3-ball brought Mobile within 33-35 with 14:28 to play, but Concordia again answered, this time with a 9-0 surge as Mobile went 0-for-3 and had three turnovers in a 3:40 span. Mobile never got closer than six from there, as the 11-point lead matched Concordia's largest lead of the contest.
