NEW ORLEANS, La-- The University of Mobile women's basketball team defeated University of New Orleans 85-83 in non-conference road action Monday evening.
Mobile (7-18, 4-11) will host rival Spring Hill Saturday at 5 pm, as only three SSAC games remain on the schedule.
Alice Honnery led the Lady Rams with 22 points and 11 rebounds, Daphnee Frieson added 16 points and 4 blocks and Leana Tajkov tallied 12 points on 6-of-11 shooting off the bench. Briana Edwards finished with 6 points, 6 assists and 5 boards in relief work.
Keri Thomas led UNO with 30 points, while Mirjam Sipos put up 25 points on 10-of-18 shooting.
UMobile out shot the Lady Privateers 50% to 47% from the floor. Neither team was a factor from the free throw line or 3-point range and both teams finished with 22 turnovers.
There were seven ties in the opening half, but with the score at 28-28 with 7:17 remaining, the Lady Rams used a 10-2 run to build a 38-30 lead with Tajkov and Honnery combining for all but two of the points. The Lady Rams then went to the half with a 44-37 lead as Morgan Melancon drilled a 3-pointer with 7 seconds left.
Mobile never trailed in the second half, but the Lady Privateers cut the deficit to one on multiple occasions, and tied it up at 73-73 with 5:36 left, but Mobile scored the next seven points. Megan Buckley cut it to 82-81 with 1:44 left, but Honnery responded with a layup, and after Sipos cut it to 84-82 with 52 seconds left, Edwards hit a free throw with 9 seconds to play and Keri Thomas missed a 3-ball with 3 ticks left.
