MOBILE, Ala-- The 22nd-ranked University of Mobile softball team defeated Morningside College 5-3 on day one of the 2012 UMobile Softball Classic Monday.
Mobile (9-0) will host Notre Dame College Tuesday at 4 pm on the second day of the three-day tournament.
Alli Hall got the win for Mobile with 2.2 innings of 3-hit relief work. She fanned 3 and allowed 2 runs. Brittney Kerr started and twirled 4.1 innings of 1-run, 2-hit ball.
Korie Fontenot finished 2-for-2 with 1 runs scored, while Kaci Pribanic went 1-for-3 with 1 RBI and Brittany Dunson went 1-for-3 with a walk and run scored.
Morningside's defense, or lack thereof, proved to be the key to the game.
Mobile struck first with a pair of runs in the 3rd, with the help of one Mustang error. One-out singles from Dunson and Hannah Beth Baker started the rally, and a botched catch by Morningside scored Dunson for the 1-0 lead. Pribanic followed with a RBI-single to right field.
After Kirsten Dargy swatted a 2-run homer in the top of the 6th to give the Mustangs a 3-2 lead, a pair of Mustang errors led to three unearned Mobile runs in the bottom half of the frame.
A single and error put runners at 2nd and 3rd to start the inning and Johnna Barnes tied it up with a sac fly. After a walk and ground out, Morningside's Michelle Brockamp dropped a pop out that would have been the final out, allowing a pair of runs to score.
