GULF SHORES, Ala-- The University of Mobile softball team split a pair of games on the final day of pool play at the 2012 Gulf Coast Invitational Saturday. Mobile beat Madonna 1-0 and fell to Thomas University 1-4.
Mobile (13-1) will play Sunday in bracket play with time and opponent to be determined.
The day started with Brittney Kerr out-pitching Hallie Minch in the 1-0 win over the Crusaders. Kerr twirled 7 innings of 3-hit shutout ball while striking out 4 and walking 1. Minch gave up 1 run on 3 hits in 6 innings of work. Kerr did not allow a ball out of the infield until the 6th inning.
All the offense Mobile would need came in the 4th inning after Hannah Beth Baker led off with a double. She advanced to 3rd on Jessica Rogers' hit and then scored on a double play ball.
In game two, Thomas' Alexa Fair limited Mobile to 1 unearned run on 5 hits in 7 innings of work. Morgan Pence took the loss for the Lady Rams after giving up 2 earned runs on 5 hits in 2 innings.
The NightHawks took control of the game with a 2-run 1st and 1-run 2nd. Three hits led to a pair in the 1st and then a Mobile error forced home an unearned run in the 2nd.
Mobile put runners on in all but two innings and left multiple runners on base in four innings.
