MOBILE, Ala-- The 7th-ranked William Carey University Lady Crusaders rallied late to sweep both games of a SSAC doubleheader over the 24th-ranked University of Mobile softball team Monday. Mobile dropped the opener 3-1 and fell in the finale 4-2.
Mobile (21-9, 3-6) visits Belhaven University Friday, April 6 for a 1 pm conference twin bill. William Carey moves to 29-6 overall and 6-2 in conference.
Game one saw Alyssa Boutwell out-duel Kamaron Strickland to get the win. Boutwell limited Mobile to 1 run on 6 hits, while striking out 4 in a complete-game effort. Strickland took the loss after giving up 3 runs on 8 hits in 6.2 innings of work.
Hannah Beth Baker and Ally Scott each went 2-for-3 at the dish for Mobile, while Hannah Cook-Kelley led William Carey, going 3-for-4 with 2 RBI.
The teams traded runs in the first, with William Carey scoring on a Jasmine Shelby sac fly and Mobile answering with a bases loaded walk to Strickland. The score stayed that way until the 7th inning when the Crusaders plated a pair on two hits with two outs. Casey Alexander Doubled and Kelsey Jo Smith walked before Cook-Kelley ripped a double to dip center to bring both home.
Game two saw Kelsey Jo Smith get the win for William Carey with 6.1 innings of 2-run, 3-hit relief. Alli Hall took the loss after giving up 3 runs on 6 hits in 5.1 innings of work.
Jessica Palmer and Baker each went 1-for-3 with 1 RBI for Mobile, while Alexander and Boutwell had two hits apiece for the Crusaders.
The Lady Rams took a 2-0 lead in the 4th inning, using three hits and three steals to score twice. Palmer doubled home Ally Scott, and then after swiping 3rd, scored on Brittany Dunson's RBI-single.
Carey scored one in the 5th on a Cook-Kelley RBI-single and then things fell apart for Mobile in the 6th when William Carey plated three runs on three hits with help from a pair of errors. Kaitlyn Perry tied it up with a RBI-double and Alexander singled home the game-winner.
