HATTIESBURG, Miss-- The 6th-ranked William Carey University Lady Crusaders swept the 24th-ranked University of Mobile in SSAC softball action Monday. William Carey picked up an 8-0 run-rule victory in a six-inning opener and took the finale 5-4.
Mobile (28-14, 10-11) will visit Faulkner Tuesday at 5 and 7 pm.
The Lady Crusaders scored eight runs on 12 hits in the opener, scoring in four of six innings.
After Mobile stranded a pair in the 1st, the Crusaders plated two in the bottom half of the inning on three hits and one error. Casey Alexander got the scoring started with a triple.
The Lady Rams failed to convert a leadoff double into a run in the 2nd, but William Carey plated one on an inside-the-park homer.
William Carey then scored five over the final two innings to finish off the run-rule victory. Back-to-back doubles started the scoring in the 5th, and Anna Lauren Fontenot doubled home three in the 6th to end the game.
Kamaron Strickland was tagged with the loss after giving up seven earned runs on 12 hits in 5.2 innings, while striking out three and walking four. Alyssa Boutwell got the win with six innings of four-hit shutout ball.
Brittany Dunson finished 2-for-3 for Mobile, while Boutwell also went 3-for-3 at the dish for William Carey.
Mobile lead 4-1 in the second game until errors led to a four-run 6th for William Carey. The Lady Rams had four errors in the game.
Nine hitters came to the plate in that bottom of the 6th. The first hitter reached on a strikeout and wild pitch, and two of the next three reached via UMobile errors. The winning run came home on a 2-run single from Anna Lauren Fontenot.
Mobile had taken the lead with a three-run 2nd that started with a Milagros Lozada single and a Kaci Pribanic 2-run homer. Dunson capped the scoring in the frame with a RBI-single.
Kelsey Jo Smith got the win with 5.1 innings of one-run relief. She struck out six and walked none. Alli Hall took the loss after giving up no earned runs on three hits in 5.1 innings of work. She fanned five and walked seven.
Dunson finished 3-for-4 for Mobile and Pribanic finished 2-for-3 with the 2-run home run. Boutwell and Fontenot each drove in a pair of runs for William Carey.
