COLUMBUS, Ga-- The 24th-ranked University of Mobile Lady Rams rallied from a 1-6 deficit to defeat 9th-ranked Shorter University 10-8 on day one of the 2012 SSAC Softball Tournament.
Mobile (30-15) will battle the winner of William Carey and Brewton-Parker Friday at 2 pm EST. The winner of that game will play at 6:30 pm Friday, while the loser will play an elimination game at 4 pm.
Shorter surged ahead 6-1 after two innings thanks to four runs on five hits in the 1st and two runs on three hits in the 2nd.
An Ally Scott RBI-single in the 3rd made it 6-2, and while Alli Hall shut down the Hawks over the next two innings, The Lady Rams started the rally with a three-run 5th.
Following an error, hit-batsman and sac bunt, Korie Fontenot drilled a 3-run homer to make it 6-5. The Lady Rams kept that momentum going with a five-run 6th after Shorter went down in order in the bottom of the 5th.
Four-straight hitters reached to start the 6th before an out was recorded, with Johnna Barnes scoring on a passed ball to tie the game at 6-6. With two outs, Scott drew a bases loaded walk to force home one run, and Jessica Palmer produced the eventual game-winner with a 2-run single to right.
The Hawks scored two in the 7th and threatened for more, but Hall stranded a pair by inducing a lineout to end the game. Hall picked up the win for Mobile with 6 innings of five-hit relief. She limited Shorter to one earned run and fanned three.
At the plate, Fontenot finished 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBI, Jessica Rogers finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored, Milagros Lozada added two hits, and both Scott and Palmer drove in a pair.
