ORANGE BEACH, Ala-- The 5th-ranked University of Mobile women's soccer team opened the 2012 season with a 2-1 victory over Grand View University in non-conference action Monday evening.
The game was scheduled to take place at the University of Mobile, but rain forced the teams to move the contest to the Orange Beach Sportsplex. Mobile (1-0) will visit 7th-ranked Martin Methodist Saturday, Aug. 25 at 6 pm.
Just 3:24 into the game, two-time All-American Christy Lachappelle gathered in a loose ball from Grand View in front of the goal and deftly knocked it home past the Viking goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead.
Then, 2:30 later, Lachappelle struck again, this time from a penalty kick, set up by a Grand View handball.
The Lady Rams kept up the pressure in the second half, finishing the game with an 18-4 shot advantage, but could not score a third goal to put the game away. The Vikings cut the deficit to one at the 77:08 mark when Lydia Hohensten fed Elle Lacher for the team's lone tally.
