MOBILE, Ala-- Former University of Mobile women's basketball player and Mobile native Daphnee Frieson has signed a professional contract with CS Universitatea Cluj Napoca, a Romanian Division A team.
"I was very excited when I got the offer," Frieson said. "I've always wanted to play pro ball, and God answered my prayers."
A 6-4 post player, Frieson played the 2011-12 season at UMobile after previously playing at Ole Miss (2006-08) and Stetson (08-10). She prepped at Vigor and Satsuma.
In 18 games last season, she averaged 11.6 points and 7.2 rebounds, while shooting 57% from the floor and totaling 25 blocks. She scored 20 points twice, against Spring Hill and Loyola, while hauling in double-digit rebounds on six occasions.
Here dominant play in the post is expected to fit in well with the style of ball they play.
"They play a more physical game over there, compared to the U.S. which plays more up-tempo," Frieson said. "After playing in the SEC against some of the top post players, and my time at UM, I think I'm prepared to play that style."
The 2012 All-SSAC West honoree has lofty goals heading into her first season of pro ball.
"They didn't make the playoffs last year, so first, I want to change that," Frieson said. "I also want to make the All-Romanian Team and play in the All-Star game."
Their season begins Sept. 23.
