UM Softball Splits Twin Bill With Columbia

MOBILE, Ala-- The 24th-ranked University split Friday's twin bill with Columbia College (Mo.) dropping the opener 2-3 and rebounding for a 5-0 win in the finale.

In that final game, Leslie Pickette grabbed the win for Mobile by limiting the Lady Cougars to three hits in 6 shutout innings. She struck out seven and walked two.

Offensively, Mobile plated five runs on only five hits, with the big blow being a four-run 4th inning that started the scoring. Ally Scott and Nicole Walker both finished 1-3 with 2 RBI, while Jessica Swanson was 1-2 with 1 RBI.

After a quick out in the 4th, singles by Kirstyn Joiner and Korie Fontenot and a hit-batsman loaded the bases for Mobile. Scott stepped up and ripped a 2-run double over the right fielder's head, and Walker followed by bouncing a 2-run single up the middle for the 4-0 lead.

The Lady Rams added an unearned tally in the 5th to complete the scoring, as Swanson singled home Desiree Truett.

The opener was all about Valerie Teter for the Lady Cougars. The junior limited Mobile to two runs on six hits in a complete game effort while striking out 10. At the plate, she finished 1-3 with a 2-run home run. Samantha Stringer added a 3-3 effort at the plate.

Kamaron Strickland took the loss for Mobile after giving up three runs on 11 hits in 7 innings of work. She fanned seven and walked one.
Jessica Swanson went 2-3 with 2 RBI for Mobile, while Holli McLeod finished 2-4.

Mobile took a 1-0 lead in the 4th on a 2-out, RBI-single from Swanson, but with one out in the 5th, Stringer singled and Teter hit a 2-run bomb to put Columbia up 2-1.

The Lady Rams answered in the bottom of the 6th on Swanson's RBI-double to plate Kirstyn Joiner, but the Lady Cougars got a leadoff double from Stringer in the 7th and then a game-winning RBI hit from Rachel Coleman.

Mobile (26-13, 6-2) hosts William Carey University April 7th for a 4 pm doubleheader.
