MOBILE, Ala-- The University of Mobile volleyball team swept visiting Xavier University 25-21, 28-26, 25-16 in non-conference action Tuesday evening at Pharr Gymnasium.
Mobile (23-10, 7-6) visits rival Spring Hill Thursday at 7 pm. The two teams went to five sets earlier this season.
The Lady Rams out hit Xavier .282 to .090 and finished with a 6-1 edge in service aces and a 9.5-4 edge in team blocks.
Disah Kolassiba led Mobile with 14 kills and a .458 hitting percentage, Bailey Nations added 10 kills, Kiara Gay put down 9 and Sara Van Wert finished with 9 kills and a .444 attack percentage.
Kolassiba finished with 4 blocks, while Van Wert added 5, while Cayce May led with 10 digs and Reagin Boggs had 37 assists. Nicole Armstrong finished with 3 aces.
The Lady Rams trailed 18-20 in the opening set, but back-to-back kills from Kolassiba knotted things at 20-20. After Xavier retook a 21-20 lead, Mobile finished the set on a 5-0 run, started by a pair of Xavier errors and ending with an Armstrong ace.
Xavier again led in the second set, building a 17-11 lead before Mobile went on a 5-0 run, with Van Wert putting down three-straight kills in the surge to pull within one. Following a pair of Mobile errors that gave the Gold Nuggets a 20-17 lead, Mobile used a 4-0 run to take a 21-20 lead, with Nations getting two kills in the run. The teams traded points the rest of the way until back-to-back Xavier attack errors ended it in Mobile's favor.
After the teams battled to a 9-9 tie early in the final set, Mobile took control. The Lady Rams used a 5-0 run with Rachel Barber at the service line to go ahead 14-9, and then Mobile closed out the set and the match with an 8-1 surge, highlighted by a pair of Armstrong aces.
