MOBILE, Ala-- The University of Mobile men's basketball team crashed the boards to beat Brewton-Parker College 56-45 in Southern States Athletic Conference action Friday evening.
Mobile (3-0, 1-0) hosts Lee University Saturday at 5 pm.
The Rams out-rebounded the Barons 47-26 and grabbed a 16-8 edge on the offensive boards to overcome 26 turnovers and a 47% effort from the charity stripe.
Kwame Beard led the Rams with 18 points and 15 boards, Chris Richardson added 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting and Julien Sargent hauled in 11 rebounds for Mobile.
Mobile held Brewton to 30% (14-47), while the Rams shot 45% (19-42). Both teams shot below 10% from 3-point range, while Brewton-Parker out shot Mobile 61% (17-28) to 47% (17-36) from the free throw line.
The Barons tallied the game's first points at the 19:44 mark, but the Rams responded with a 12-0 run over the next 6:43, capped by a bucket from Richardson. From there, the Rams never led in the half by less than seven, and went into the break with a 23-16 lead.
The Rams led the entire second half, and Brewton was never able to pull within one possession. The Barons cut it to 23-18 right off the bat, but Mobile used a 5-0 spurt to return to a double-digit advantage, thanks to three Baron turnovers.
