BIRMINGHAM, Ala-- The University of Mobile women's basketball team fell 56-58 at NCAA-III Birmingham Southern Tuesday evening.
Mobile (3-4) will visit non-conference foe Xavier University Nov. 27 at 5 pm.
Deonica McCormick tallied 18 points and 6 steals to lead Mobile, while Briana Edwards finished with 14 points on 6-of-13 shooting.
Melanie Short led the Panthers with 18 points and 10 boards, while Erin Moore finished with 15 points and 8 rebounds.
The Lady Rams lost despite the Panthers being in a giving mood, as BSC finished with 34 turnovers, while Mobile had only 12 turnovers. But, the Panthers won the rebounding battle 46-27 and out shot Mobile 50% (23-46) to 33% (22-67) from the floor.
Mobile did not score in the opening half until 7:58 had run off the clock, and by that time they were in an 8-0 hole. BSC grabbed a 10-2 lead and led the entire half, though Mobile did cut it to 22-20 on a bucket from McCormick. The Panthers got back-to-back scores from Short to take a 29-22 lead into the break.
The second half was all BSC early, until Mobile used a 12-2 run to grab their first lead of the game at the 9:35 mark, when a McCormick still and deuce made it 43-42. After the teams traded points to make it 47-47, Mobile got a score from Molly Speed at 6:26 to go ahead 49-47. The Lady Rams continued to hold that lead, when a Shaunette Battle free throw made it 56-53 with 39 seconds to go. BSC then cut the lead to one on an offensive putback by Short at 15 seconds. The Lady Rams then missed the front end of a one-and-one with 11 seconds to go, and the Panthers got the rebound, and then got a three-point play from Erin Moore with seconds remaining.
