MOBILE, Ala-- The University of Mobile men's basketball team held on for a 66-63 win over visiting Tennessee Temple University Thursday evening at Pharr Gym.
Mobile (7-5, 1-3) hosts Coastal Georgia Jan. 4 at 7:30 pm.
The lone Rams to score in double figures both came off the bench to do so, as Cody Scott led with 12 points and Julien Sargent chipped in 10 points and 6 boards. Chris Richardson and Marcus Polnett each had 9 points for the Rams.
Weedlens Beauvil led the Crusaders with 21 points on 6-of-11 shooting from 3-point range.
Tennessee Temple out shot Mobile 51% to 40% from the floor, Mobile held a 38% to 35% edge from 3-point range and the Crusaders shot 75% from the free throw line, compared to 62% for the Rams. Mobile forced 22 turnovers and held a 15-8 edge in offensive rebounds.
The Crusaders scored first in the game, but Mobile answered by scoring the next seven points to take a 7-2 lead at the 15:47 mark on a Kwame Beard 3-pointer. The Rams held that lead until the Crusaders used a 9-2 run to take a 2-point lead with 5:03 left. The teams went into the half tied at 33-33.
The second half was back-and-forth with 14 lead changes, and it stayed a one-possession game until the Rams grabbed a 45-41 lead on a bucket from Marcus Polnett with 12:59 left to play. It went right back to being a close game, and Mobile was trailing 55-54 with 4:29 to play. The Rams went on a 10-3 run, with the first six points coming from Scott. Tennessee Temple cut it to 65-63 with 23 ticks left on a 3-ball from Beauvil, and after the Rams went 1-for-2 at the stripe, the Crusaders had a pair of 3-pointers come up short.
