MONTGOMERY, Ala-- The University of Mobile women's basketball team dropped an exhibition game at Alabama State University 55-72 Saturday afternoon.
Mobile (7-6) will return to action Jan. 4 at 5:30 pm when they host Coastal Georgia.
Courtney Bayliss led Mobile with 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting from 3-point range and Deonica McCormick added 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting.
Nakiya Smith led a trio of Hornets in double figures with 23 points.
Alabama State dominated on the boards 43-27 and held a 20-13 edge in offensive rebounds. The Hornets also finished with a 48% to 35% edge in field goal percentage.
The Hornets scored the first two buckets of the game 20 seconds into the action and never relinquished the lead. A Bayliss 3-pointer made it 4-3, but Alabama State reeled off the next eight points to pull back away. The Lady Rams then pulled within 23-20 on another Bayliss 3-ball with 2:46 to go in the half, but the Hornets finished the period on a 10-2 run to take a 33-22 lead into the break.
Mobile made an early 14-4 run in the final half to pull within 41-38 with 15:03 to go, capped by a bucket from Shontae Dillon, but the Hornets again answered, this time with a 20-3 run to put the game out of reach.
