Lady Rams Fall By Two In SSAC Play

MOBILE, Ala-- The University of Mobile women's basketball team fell 53-55 to visiting Coastal Georgia in Southern States Athletic Conference action Friday evening.
Mobile (7-7, 2-3) hosts Truett-McConnell Saturday at 3 pm.
Deonica McCormick was the lone Lady Ram with 13 points, while Courtney Bayliss added 9 and Shontae Dillon finished with 6 points and 9 boards.
Crystal Chaney led a pair of Mariners in double figures with 11 points, and added 10 boards for the double-double.
Mobile out shot the visitors 34% to 29% from the floor, but the Mariners out shot Mobile 68% (15-22) to 43% (6-14) from the charity stripe. Mobile held a 51-40 lead on the boards, but turned the ball over 23 times.
It was a defensive struggle throughout, especially in the first half, when Mobile took a 22-20 lead into the break. Mobile scored first in the game and led the entire way until the Marines got five-straight points from Madel Madden to take a 14-13 lead with 6:23 to play. Mobile answered right back with a bucket from Leana Tajkov 15 seconds later to retake the lead. The largest lead of the half was a four-point UMobile lead.
The second half was the same way early, as Coastal Georgia grabbed a 24-23 lead 2:09 into the period, but Mobile retook the lead on a McCormick bucket, and never gave it up until the Mariners took a 43-42 lead with 4:28 to play. The teams traded buckets over the next couple of minutes until the game was tied at 50-50 with 2:05 to play. From there, the Lady Rams missed their next two shots and had a turnover, as Coastal Georgia took a 53-50 lead with 49 ticks left on an Olivia Melvin 3-ball. Following a UMobile miss, Melvin sank a pair of free throws to go ahead by five. Briana Edwards followed with a 3-pointer, but Mobile missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
