JACKSON, Miss-- The University of Mobile men's basketball team won 65-59 at Southern States Athletic Conference rival Belhaven University Thursday evening.
Mobile (11-6, 5-4) visits William Carey University Saturday at 4 pm.
Kwame Beard led the Rams with 12 points and 12 rebounds, Marcus Polnett added 11 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the free throw line, and both Brandon Morris and Julien Sargent finished with 10 points.
Jerrial Dawson led the Blazers with 17 points on 11-of-11 shooting from the free throw line.
The Rams out shot the Blazers 46% to 38% from the floor, while Belhaven held a 77% (20-26) to 48% (13-27) edge from the charity stripe. Mobile forced 20 turnovers and held a 39-30 edge in rebounds.
Mobile scored first in the game with a Kevin Calloway bucket 14 seconds in, and never trailed in the period. Up 11-9 with 12:47 to go, Mobile scored the next eight thanks to back-to-back 3-pointers from Beard and Morris. The Rams held a 32-25 lead with 1:31 to play in the half, but the Blazers scored the last seven, thanks to five free throws from Dawson to make it 32-32 at the break.
Belhaven took its first lead of the contest 14 seconds into the final half, and pushed it to a 42-37 advantage with 12:58 to play. Over the next 3:30, the Rams went on a 10-2 run thanks to four points from Chris Richardson, and Mobile never gave up the lead. Belhaven did fight back to knot it at 48-48, but Morris answered with a 3-ball, and then he again answered at the six-minute mark with a jumper when Belhaven pulled within one. With 2:07 left the Blazers pulled within 59-57, but Mobile got back-to-back buckets from Cody Scott and Calloway to pull back away.
