MOBILE, Ala-- The University of Mobile baseball team split Saturday's doubleheader with visiting Talladega, taking the opener 4-1 before falling 2-1 in the finale. The Rams take the series 2-1.
Mobile (2-1) visits Loyola University Tuesday, Feb. 5 for a 3 pm doubleheader.
In the opener, the Rams used a three-run 5th to ignite the offense, and got a strong outing from Shane Ikner, who went 6 innings, allowing only one run on six hits with five strikeouts. Josh Hollingsworth worked a perfect 7th for the save.
Braxton Hamil reached base three times and scored two runs, while Ryan Parazine drove in a pair for the Rams.
With the score tied 1-1 through four innings, Payne Palmer started the 5th with a double, and then a two-base error on a Jared Brannon bunt single led to more runs. Jacob Knowles produced a run-scoring single in the inning and Parazine drove home Hamil with a fielder's choice.
In game two, Corey Fountain took the loss for the Rams after giving up two runs on four hits in 5.2 innings of work. Matt Holland picked up the win for Talladega with 6 innings of two-hit, one-run ball.
Keith Granger provided the only offense of the day for the Rams, going 2-for-3 with a solo home run and a double.
The only runs the Tornadoes would need came in the 2nd inning on a RBI-groundout from Nick Foster and a steal of home from Maurice Leverett.
The Rams threatened in the final inning, when Knowles produced a one-out pinch-hit single, and a groundout moved pinchrunner Alec Raley to second. Granger blooped a double to right, but Raley was thrown out at home to end the game.
