MOBILE, Ala-- The University of Mobile women's basketball team used a stifling defense to force 36 turnovers on their way to a 65-46 victory over visiting Trinity Baptist in non-conference action Monday evening at Pharr Gym.
While neither team shot well from the floor (Trinity Baptist 29% - Mobile 31%), the Lady Rams were able to gain an edge by forcing the 36 turnovers versus 17 of their own, and holding a 27-14 edge on the offensive boards.
Briana Edwards led Mobile with 13 points and added 8 rebounds, Courtney Bayliss finished with 11 points and 9 rebounds, Deonica McCormick added 10 points and 5 steals, and Shontae Dillon finished with 9 points, 6 rebounds and 6 steals for the Lady Rams.
The Lady Eagles managed a 3-2 lead 3:19 into the game, but the Lady Rams gained the lead for good at the 15:54 mark when Shaunette Battle drained a 3-pointer to put her team up 5-3. Trinity fought to within 13-12 with 10:58 remaining, but Mobile used a 12-2 run over the next 6:10 to gain separation. The Lady Rams forced seven turnovers in the stretch. Mobile took a 35-24 lead into the break.
Trinity fought back to within 37-33 5:56 into the final period, but the Lady Rams clamped down on defense and went on a 16-4 run over the next 8:03, forcing another seven turnovers during the run. The largest lead of the game was the final margin of 19 points.
Mobile (13-11, 7-6) visits Loyola University Thursday at 5:30 pm.
