NEW ORLEANS, La-- The University of Mobile men's basketball team outscored Loyola 11-1 in overtime to win 65-55 in Southern States Athletic Conference action Thursday evening.
Mobile (14-10, 7-7) hosts William Carey University Saturday at 4 pm.
Julien Sargent led the Rams with 20 points on 8-of-10 shooting to go along with 15 rebounds, while Kwame Beard poured in 17 points to go along with 7 rebounds and 4 steals.
Robert Lovaglio led a pair of Loyola players in double figures with 18 points thanks to 7-of-10 shooting from the free throw line.
The Rams crashed the boards to outrebound the Wolf Pack 41-28, and Mobile also out shot the home team 48% to 38% from the floor, while neither team was a factor from 3-point range.
While the Rams scored first in the game, on a bucket from Sargent 1:21 into play, and never gave up the lead, Loyola still managed to force overtime. In that opening period, the Rams used a 13-3 run to turn a slim 8-7 lead into a 21-10 advantage with 6:58 to play. The run was aided by back-to-back buckets from DeVondre Peoples. Five late points from Loyola's David Kuhl cut Mobile's lead to 25-19 heading into halftime.
After the Wolf Pack scored first in the final half, the Rams answered with an 11-2 run to take a 13-point lead thanks to five points from Beard. With Mobile leading 40-28 with 12:24 to play, the Wolf Pack started to creep back in the game with a 10-3 run over the next 4:48 to pull within 43-38. As the teams jostled back-and-forth, Mobile did manage to take a seven-point lead with 2:37 to play, but Loyola closed regulation on a 9-2 run to force overtime. The Rams led 54-50 on a pair of Sargent free throws with 1:25 to play, but Kuhl answered with a bucket, and then a Mobile turnover led to a pair of McCall Tomeny free throws with 27 ticks left to tie it.
Overtime found Mobile dominating again, as Sargent and Beard scored the first five points, and then after a Wolf Pack free throw, the Rams finished the extra period on a 6-0 run.
