MOBILE, Ala-- The University of Mobile men's basketball team fell 53-67 to visiting Belhaven University Thursday evening in Southern States Athletic Conference action.
Mobile (14-12, 7-9) visits Auburn-Montgomery Saturday at 4 pm.
Belhaven out shot Mobile 47% to 44% from the floor, 50% (7-14) to 17% (3-18) from 3-point range and 92% (12-13) to 50% (4-8) from the charity stripe. All seven of the 3-pointers Belhaven made came in the opening half and all 12 of their free throws came in the final period.
Cole Fountain led the Rams with 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting off the bench, while Chris Richardson finished with 10 points.
Jordan Butts led a trio of Blazers in double figures with 18 points on 6-of-15 shooting.
Belhaven jumped out to a 12-3 lead to start the game thanks to five points from Butts. Down 13-18, Mobile went on a 9-3 run, capped by a bucket from Fountain to take its first lead of the game, 22-21 with 6:24 to go. The teams traded baskets the rest of the half, and Luke Rogers hit a 3-pointer with 8 seconds left to give Belhaven a 37-33 lead heading into halftime.
The Rams could not reclaim the lead in the second half. Three times in the opening 9:08 Mobile pulled within one bucket, but the first time Butts answered with points, and Chris Coefield answered for the Blazers the next two times. Then, with Mobile trailing 53-48, the Blazers went on an 11-2 run to take control with a 14-point lead with 1:31 to play. The Blazers went 5-for-5 from the charity stripe in that run.
