Lady Rams Fall 57-63 To Visiting Belhaven

MOBILE, Ala-- The University of Mobile women's basketball team fell 57-63 to visiting Belhaven University Thursday evening in Southern States Athletic Conference action.

Mobile (14-13, 8-8) visits Auburn-Montgomery Saturday at 2 pm.

Belhaven out shot Mobile 45% to 35% from the floor, 57% to 15% from 3-point range and 71% to 50% from the free throw line. Mobile forced 15 turnovers, versus only eight of their own and held a 16-9 edge in offensive rebounds.

Deonica McCormick led the Lady Rams with 21 points on 10-of-18 shooting, while Shontae Dillon added 12 points and Briana Edwards finished with 10.

Sarah Carr led a pair of Blazers in double figures with 16 points.

Belhaven started the game by taking a 3-0 lead on a Carr 3-pointer just 20 seconds in, and Mobile bounced back to take its first lead of the contest with 16:53 to play on a deuce from McCormick. Up 6-5, the Lady Rams went on a 10-4 run to build a 16-9 lead, capped by buckets from Courtney Bayliss and McCormick. Belhaven answered back with six-straight points to trim it to one, but Mobile held on to the lead for another five minutes, when Ashley Wakefield hit a pair of free throws to make it 26-24 Blazers with 4:05 to go. Belhaven took a 34-30 lead into the break.

With Mobile trailing only 41-36 with 16:48 to play in the final half, the Blazers went on a game-changing 9-0 run over the next 3:14 as Mobile went 0-for-3 from the floor with a pair of turnovers. The Blazers maintained a double-digit lead until the 6:13 mark when Edwards hit a pair of free throws to bring Mobile within nine. Mobile went on to score the next five points to pull within 55-50 with 4:40 to play. The rest of the way, the Lady Rams could not get closer, as Belhaven answered each Mobile point with points of their own.
