PENSACOLA, Fla-- The University of Mobile baseball team's 9th-inning rally at 7th-ranked University of West Florida fell short Wednesday as the Rams lost 4-5.
Mobile (5-6, 0-3) hosts Southern Poly for a three-game Southern States Athletic Conference series beginning Thursday with an 11 am doubleheader.
Trailing 5-0 heading into the final inning, the Rams took advantage of some sloppy Argos defense to close the gap. After a Justin Beck single and a strikeout, a pair of UWF errors and a walk put the Rams on the board. Braxton Hamil followed with a sac fly and Payne Palmer and Neil Hudson went back-to-back with run-scoring singles, before the Argos brought in Josh McLaney, who recorded the strikeout to strand a pair.
The Argos started the scoring in the 2nd with a manufactured run, and then tacked on one in the 7th and three in the 8th on three hits.
Heading into the 9th the Rams had recorded only a pair of hits.
Jordan DeLorenzo got the win for UWF with 5 innings of no-hit, shutout ball with five strikeouts. Jacob Knowles took the loss for Mobile after giving up only one run on two hits in four innings of ball, while fanning six and walking one.
Dustin Saulmon and Jeremy Bajdaun recorded two hits each for the Argos, while Hamil and Palmer each went 1-for-3 with one RBI for the Rams.
