MOBILE, Ala-- The University of Mobile baseball team used a three-run 7th inning to take game one 5-4 from visiting Southern Poly before dropping the finale 8-5.
Mobile (6-7, 1-4) hosts Southern Poly for a single game Friday at a time to be determined.
Trailing 4-2 heading into the final inning of the 7-inning opener, the Rams mounted a rally, scoring three runs on four hits with one error aiding the cause.
The Rams started the inning with three pinch hitters, with Keith Granger getting an infield single and Keith Shirah following two hitters later with a two-run homer to tie the game. After Jared Brannon reached on an error, Austin Curtis singled and Braxton Hamil walked, Phlip McDuffie delivered a two-out walkoff single to left field.
Jeff Price picked up the win with 1.2 innings of one run relief. Nick Blount took the loss after giving up three runs on four hits in 1.1 innings of relief.
McDuffie finished 2-for-4 for Mobile, while Shirah and Payne Palmer each drove in a pair of runs.
In game two, the Rams started the scoring with a two-run 2nd thanks to a suicide squeeze from Brady King and a sac fly from Justin Beck. That lasted until the Hornets plated four runs on four hits in the 5th inning.
They pushed that lead to 6-2 heading to the 7th, when the Rams tried to make another late rally. Two singles and a walk started the inning with a run and two on. After two straight outs, McDuffie singled home a pair, and with two on Palmer gave a ball a ride to deep left, but it was tracked down.
Kendall Wehrle then answered with a 2-run homer for the Hornets in the top of the 9th to give them some breathing room.
Shane Ikner took the loss after giving up six runs on nine hits in 6.1 innings of work. Jordan Egan got the win with 6 innings of four-run ball, while Kevin Bibler allowed one run on three hits in 3 innings of relief to get the save.
McDuffie finished 2-for-5 with two RBI, while Beck went 2-for-3 with one RBI.
