MOBILE, Ala-- Southern Poly scored five runs over the final four innings to beat the University of Mobile 5-2 in Southern States Athletic Conference baseball action Friday afternoon.
Mobile (6-8, 1-5) visits rival Spring Hill Tuesday at 4 pm.
Troy Herterick worked 2.1 innings of two-hit, shutout relief to get the win for Southern Poly, while Zach Smith struck out three in 1.2 innings of scoreless relief to get the save. Jacob Knowles took the loss after giving up two runs on two hits in .1 innings of relief work.
Braxton Hamil was 2-for-4 with two RBI for the Rams, while Justin Beck finished 2-for-4. Southern Poly had five players record multiple hits, while Jordan Williams went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
As Corey Fountain worked four scoreless innings to start the game, stranding four runners, the Rams jumped on top with a pair of runs in the bottom of the 4th. With one out, Ryan Parazine walked and Philip McDuffie singled. After moving up on a groundout, Hamil bounced a 2-run hit up the middle for the 2-0 lead.
After a shutdown 5th, the Hornets finally got to Fountain for a one in the 6th on Williams' RBI-single. They tied it up in the 7th when Josue Quinones doubled home a run with two outs.
The Hornets then went ahead for good in the 8th with two runs on three hits. The game-winning run was a RBI single from Wiliams.
Mobile tried to rally in the 8th, as Beck, Jared Brannon and Angelo Bruno recorded three-straight hits to load the bases with one out. But, Smith struck out the Rams' 3 and 4 hitters to end the threat. Mobile put two more on in the 9th, but again came up empty.
