MOBILE, Ala-- The University of Mobile women's basketball team defeated Spring Hill College 59-54 to cap the regular season, and will be the 4th seed out of the SSAC West in the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament Feb. 27 - Mar. 2 at the Multiplex at Cramton Bowl in Montgomery, Ala.
The Lady Rams (15-14, 9-9) got a game-high 15 points from Briana Edwards on 6-of-13 shooting, Shaunette Battle added 11 points off the bench on 3-of-6 shooting from 3-point range and Deonica McCormick finished with 10 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists.
Mobile committed only seven turnovers and forced 20 Badger turnovers. Spring Hill shot 44% from the field compared to 35% for the Lady Rams, but Mobile did hold a 12-5 edge in offensive boards.
Mobile scored first on a 3-pointer from Courtney Bayliss, but the Badgers answered with a 16-2 run over the next six minutes to grab an eleven point advantage. The Lady Rams answered right back with a 16-4 run to reclaim the lead on a bucket from Leana Tajkov. Spring Hill then took a 30-26 advantage into halftime.
The Lady Rams started the final half on a 15-5 run over the first 6:48 to build a 41-35 advantage. Mobile forced four turnovers in that stretch. After the Badgers tied the game at 41-41, a deuce from Battle at the 9:18 mark gave Mobile the lead for good.
Mobile will open the conference tournament against either Brenau or Southern Wesleyan.
