UMobile Men Stay Alive With 73-70 Win In SSAC Tourney

MONTGOMERY, Ala-- The University of Mobile men's basketball team defeated Truett-McConnell 73-70 in the SSAC Tournament Play-In game Wednesday at the Cramton Bowl.

Mobile (16-13) advances to face the West's top seed William Carey University Thursday at 6:15 pm.

Kwame Beard led the Rams with 19 points and 6 rebounds, Brandon Morris added 15 points and 7 boards, Kevin Calloway finished with 12 points and 8 rebounds and Cody Scott chipped in 10 points for the Rams.

Anthony Dorsey led a trio of Bears in double figures with 20 points on 7-of-17 shooting.

Mobile out shot the Bears 47% to 43% from the floor and won the rebounding battle 38-28. After shooting only 39% from the floor in the opening half, the Rams upped it to a sizzling 59% in the final period, while holding Truett to 35%.

After Truett-McConnell scored the game's first seven points, the Rams led for only seven seconds of the opening period. That came when a Morris bucket gave the team a short-lived 8-7 advantage with 12:51 to go. The Bears led by as many as eleven points in the half on a Dorsey bucket with 2:34 to go and took a 41-35 advantage into the break.

The Rams bounced back to open the second half on a 13-4 run to take their second lead of the game, 48-45, on a Beard 3-pointer. After the Bears tied the game at 48-48, the Rams took the lead for good with 12:58 to go on a bucket from Morris. Mobile score five more to build a seven-point advantage before the Bears answered. Dorsey hit a pair of free throws with 1:04 left to cut the Rams lead to three, and Beard answered by going 1-for-2 from the charity stripe. After an Andretti Loyd 3-pointer cut the Rams' lead to one with 43 ticks left, Chris Richardson answered 30 ticks later by going 2-for-2 from the free throw line to retake the three-point lead. A Truett 3-ball with three seconds left came up short.
