MONTGOMERY, Ala-- The University of Mobile men's basketball team fell 63-75 to 12th-ranked William Carey in the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament Thursday evening.
Mobile ends the season with a 16-14 overall record.
Brandon Morris was the lone Ram to score in double figures, finishing the game with 21 points on 8-of-16 shooting from the floor and 4-of-8 shooting from 3-point range.
Guy Payne led a quartet of Crusaders in double figures with 20 points on 6-of-11 shooting, while Jeremiah Dunnings chipped in 19 points.
William Carey forced 15 turnovers and committed only 9 turnovers while holding a large advantage at the charity stripe. William Carey hit 20-of-26 from the free throw line, compared to a 9-of-22 effort for the Rams.
The first 14:04 of the opening half saw the teams trade buckets, as neither team could take a lead of more than one possession. The first such lead came with 5:56 left when a Dunning basket gave the Crusaders a 25-21 advantage. After the Rams pulled within 27-26 when Chris Richardson went 1-for-2 at the free throw line with 4:31 to go, the Crusaders answered by closing the half on a 13-2 run to take a 40-28 lead into the break. Dunning accounted for 10 of William Carey's 13 points in the surge.
William Carey then opened the final half by scoring the first seven points to build a 27-28 advantage, and the Rams could not get back within single digits until the cut it to 62-53 with 6:47 to play on a putback from Cole Fountain to cap a 12-2 run. But, the Crusaders scored the game's next ten points to put it away.
