MOBILE, Ala-- The University of Mobile baseball team used a six-run 5th inning to beat Loyola University 8-5 in the Southern States Athletic Conference series opener Friday at Jacobs Field.
Mobile (8-8, 2-5) hosts the Wolf Pack for a noon doubleheader Saturday to cap the series.
Trailing 5-2 heading to the bottom of the 5th, the Rams sent 12 hitters to the plate and scored six runs on five hits to take control of the game. Five straight hitters reached safely to start the inning with Braxton Hamil drawing a bases loaded walk and Jacob Knowles bouncing a 2-run single to left to tie the game. The scoring continued when Jared Brannon singled home one and Brady King singled home a pair with two outs.
The Mobile bullpen held the Wolf Pack scoreless after a four-run 4th, with Cole Vaughan picking up the win with 3.1 innings of three-hit relief, allowing one unearned run, walking four and fanning a pair. Josh Hollingsworth worked a perfect 9th for the save.
King finished 3-for-4 with two RBI for the Rams, while Brannon, Hamil and Payne Palmer each tacked on a pair of hits. Knowles finished the day with three RBI from the DH spot.
Mobile started the game with a pair of runs in the 1st on a Philip McDuffie RBI groundout and a sac fly from Knowles. Ryan Hines started for the Rams and stranded seven baserunners in the first three innings, while allowing only one run before Loyola broke through with four runs on five hits in the 4th.
