GULF SHORES, Ala-- The 19th-ranked University of Mobile softball team fell 1-2 to Cumberland University in bracket play at the 2013 Gulf Coast Invitational Sunday.
Mobile (10-5) will host Central Methodist Tuesday, March 12 at 4 pm for a doubleheader.
Cumberland's Courtney Maynard limited Mobile to one run on four hits in a complete-game effort. She fanned five and walked three. Kamaron Strickland took the loss after giving up two runs on seven hits in seven innings of work.
With the game scoreless through 3.5 innings of play, the Lady Rams struck first, as Korie Fontenot led off with a single, moved up two bags on back-to-back sac bunts and touched home on Emily Vickrey's RBI-double over the left fielder's head.
But, Cumberland wasted little time in answering, notching single tallies in each of the next two turns at bat. They tied it up in the 5th on a single, wild pitch, grounder and sac fly, and then scored the game-winner in the 6th thanks to a leadoff single, sac bunt, grounder and wild pitch.
Vickrey finished 1-for-3 with one RBI and Fontenot had a hit and run scored for Mobile. Jessica Roper finished 2-for-3 for Cumberland.
