MOBILE, Ala-- The 21st-ranked University of Mobile softball team handed 4th-ranked Rogers State University its first loss of the season Thursday, run-ruling the Hillcats 9-1 in six innings in the final game after dropping the opener 9-7 in eight innings.
Mobile (15-8, 0-2) hosts Truett-McConnell Friday at 1 pm for a Southern States Athletic Conference twin bill.
After the teams traded runs in the first inning of game two, the Lady Rams broke it open with a seven-run 2nd inning, doing the damage on eight hits.
Allie Luster started the rally with a single, and after a failed sac bunt attempt, seven-straight batters recorded hits, with all of them being singles until Jordan Coleman ripped a 3-run double to cap the rally. Jessica Palmer, Brittany Dunson, Alexa Da Rosa and Korie Fontenot had RBI-singles in the inning.
That was more than enough run support for Kamaron Strickland, as she worked six innings of six-hit ball, allowing only one run and walking none.
Palmer finished 3-for-3 in the game, while Coleman, Fontenot, Da Rosa, Stuart and Dunson added two hits apiece.
Mobile was shut down for the first five innings of the opener, but tallied two runs in the 6th to tie the game at 2-2 on RBI-doubles from Da Rosa and Coleman.
Rogers State loaded the bags in the 8th with a walk and a single, and after a force at home, five straight batters reached as seven runs crossed the plate. Two walks and a hit batsman aided the scoring.
The Lady Rams did not go quietly, as they plated five runs on five hits, as the first five batters recorded hits.
Alli Hall took the loss after giving up seven earned runs on six hits in 7.1 innings of work. She walked eight and fanned three.
Da Rosa, Coleman and Palmer all had three hits in the game for Mobile.
