MOBILE, Ala-- The 23rd-ranked University of Mobile softball team split a GCAC doubleheader with 6th-ranked Belhaven University Tuesday, taking the opener 9-4 before falling in the finale 4-0.
Mobile (32-17, 11-5) is done until the GCAC Tournament April 29-30 at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex. Belhaven moves to 44-6 overall and 11-3 in GCAC play.
The Lady Rams wasted little time in making a statement in game one, putting up an eight-spot in the 1st to take an 8-0 lead, before coasting to the 9-4 victory.
Mobile sent 13 batters to the plate in the inning, recording 7 hits and benefiting from a Belhaven error. A walk and hit-batsman put two on to start the inning, and then four straight Lady Rams recorded hits to plate four. Desiree Truett started the scoring with a 2-run double to left, and she added a 2-run single to cap the inning.
Belhaven scored four runs over the final three innings to prevent the run-rule from taking place. Leslie Pickette got the win for Mobile after limiting Belhaven to 1 run on 5 hits in 4.1 innings of work. Rebecca Rousseau took the loss after giving up 4 earned on 6 hits in 5 innings.
Truett finished 2-4 with 4 RBI, Kirstyn Joiner finished 3-4 and Jessica Swanson went 2-4 with 1 RBI.
In the final game, Belhaven struck first with a single tally in the 1st, and the Lady Rams could not do any damage against Sarah Burns.
Burns picked up the win after striking out 11 Mobile hitters in 7 innings of shutout ball. Victoria Buie took the loss after giving up 4 runs on 5 hits in 3.1 innings. Christina Jaques went 3-4 to lead Belhaven.
Jaques singled home Jessica Eggold for the decisive run in the 1st inning. Despite being held to four hits, the Lady Rams had chances, but could not push runners home. They wasted a two-on, no-out start in the 2nd and left the bases loaded in the 5th.
