Rams Drop Pair To Eagles

MOBILE, Ala-- The University of Mobile baseball team dropped a pair of 7-inning ball games to visiting Faulkner University Tuesday afternoon in non-conference NAIA action.

Faulkner (11-4) took the opener 9-1 and then grabbed the finale 10-6. Mobile (6-8, 1-4) hosts Gulf Coast Athletic Conference foe LSU-Shreveport for a three-game series this weekend, beginning Friday at 2 pm.

In the opener, Faulkner tallied 9 runs on 9 hits, versus 1 run on 2 hits for Mobile. Daniel Esparza grabbed the win with 4 innings of 2-hit, 1-run ball, while Andrew Hockenbury threw 3 hitless innings for the save. Alan Butts took the loss for Mobile after giving up 2 earned runs in 4 innings of work.

Mobile only trailed 3-1 after four innings of work, but the Eagles put up a 4-spot in the 5th thanks to four hits and a pair of walks.

In the finale, Mobile led 5-3 going into the 6th inning, but Faulkner scored 3 in the 6th and 4 in the 7th to grab the win, while racking up 14 hits. Justin Hay picked up the win for the Eagles with 2.2 innings of 1-hit, shutout relief, while John Ladnier was tagged with the loss for Mobile after giving up 1 run on 3 hits without recording an out in relief.

Travis Williamson and Hunter Norris both finished 2-4 for the Rams, while Jake Halverson was 1-3 with 1 run and 1 RBI. Jonathan Gober finished 3-4 with 3 RBI for Faulkner, while Kevin Villarreal added 2 hits and 2 RBI.

Faulkner opened with 2 runs on 3 hits in the top of the 1st, but the Rams added five runs over the next three innings, including a pair in both the 2nd and 3rd frames. Derek Bourgeois and Halverson produced RBI's in the 2nd and then a pair of Faulkner errors, a walk and two hit-batsman plated two more runs for Mobile in the 3rd to take a 5-2 lead.

In the 6th, Faulkner grabbed three runs thanks to four 2-out hits, after the inning started with a two strikeouts sandwiched around a single. The Eagles put the game away in the 7th with a 4-spot, with Gober providing a 2-run double.
