UM Wins Conference Game

MOBILE, Ala-- The University of Mobile men's basketball team used a big first half to take down Southern University at New Orleans 77-68 in Gulf Coast Athletic Conference action at Pharr Gym Thursday evening.
 
Mobile (10-7, 3-5) will host rival Spring Hill College Saturday, Jan. 30 at 7 pm.
 
Donte Walker led the Rams with 17 points and 9 boards, Spencer Duke added 14 points, Treii Pace finished with 11, and Marcus Polnett and Ji Kimbrough added 10 points apiece for Mobile.
 
Xavier Francis led SUNO with 21 points, while Lionel Green added 14. The Rams out shot the Knights 52% to 39% from the floor.
 
In the first half, the Rams out shot SUNO 46% to 20% and forced 11 turnovers, while hitting 5-of-7 from 3-point range, compared to 0-of-7 from the visitors. After Walker put Mobile ahead 5-0 with five quick points, the Rams built a 22-12 lead on a Kimbrough 3-ball with 8:28 left. Mobile managed to build the lead to as much as 16 points, taking a 36-20 lead into the break. In that half, SUNO scored 9 points in the first 7:05, but tallied only 11 points in the remaining 12:55 of play.
 
The biggest lead of the game came just 1:21 into the final half when a bucket from Kimbrough put Mobile ahead 39-21. The Knights managed to cut the lead down to five with 12:56 left, but could get no closer as the Rams kept answering, before pulling back ahead by double-figures at the 4:49 mark.
