MOBILE, Ala-- The University of Mobile men's soccer team (2-4) picked up a much-needed victory Saturday, upsetting NAIA No. 10 Embry-Riddle 1-0.
In a physical contest that featured 10 yellow cards, the Rams made David Maddren's goal in the 65th minute stand up. Maddren scored by knocking home a loose ball in the box off a corner kick from Ruben Diaz.
Jason Williams got the shutout victory for the Rams with a pair of saves as Embry-Riddle got off 16 shots, but put only 3 on target. Williams made a great sprawling save on an Eagles' shot from point-blank range in the second half to help Maddren's tally hold up. Maddren also stopped a potential goal in the second half, heading away a shot that looked headed for the far post.
Diaz put both of his shots on target, including a low free kick from the middle of the field that was stopped by a diving effort from the Eagles' keeper just inside the far post.
Mobile returns to action at home Tuesday, Sept. 22 against Mid-Continent at 7 pm.
