MONTICELLO, Ark.-- The University of Mobile women's basketball team used Gerica Johnson's 33 points to defeat NCAA II University of Arkansas-Monticello 68-66 Friday at the Dr. Mary Jane Gilbert Classic, hosted by Arkansas-Monticello.
It's the third straight 30-plus game for Johnson, who scored 23 of the 33 in the opening half. She hit 13-of-16 from the charity stripe. Alice Honnery added 11 points, 9 rebounds and 3 blocks for Mobile.
The Cotton Blossoms of Arkansas-Monticello scored first in the game, but never led again in the opening half, after Johnson tied it and Adrienne Mackay put Mobile up 4-2. Up 13-11 with 13:29 left, the Lady Rams went on a 16-4 run to build a 14-point lead with 7:22 left. Mobile led by as much as 16 in the half.
In the second half, the Cotton Blossoms made their move with UM leading 52-42 with 15:26 on the clock. They went on a 12-1 run to take their first lead since scoring the first bucket of the game. The teams traded leads from there until Mobile found itself trailing 63-60 with 3:25 to go. UM then got four straight points from Johnson to retake a 64-63 lead. UAM tied it up at 65-65 with 56 seconds left, but a layup from Honnery gave the lead back to the Lady Rams for good.
The Lady Rams (5-1) battle NCAA II Southern Arkansas University Saturday at noon.
