MOBILE, Ala-- The University of Mobile women's soccer team battled visiting Brenau University to a 2-2 double-overtime tie Friday evening to open up the 2009 season.
The Lady Rams controlled tempo much of the game, out-shooting Brenau 21-9, but held only a 7-6 edge in shots on target. Mobile also kept forcing the issue to get 16 corner kicks, but could not convert either of those into a tally on the scoreboard. That offensive pressure led to an early Mobile goal and a pair of Mobile leads, but the visitors kept answering.
Freshman Christy Lachappelle put the Lady Rams on the board first just 13:35 into the game when she headed a free kick from Louise Arseneault over the Brenau keeper into the back of the net. The Lady Rams controlled tempo from that point, until Brenau's Shawna Manchette took a loose ball in the Mobile box and punched it past Mobile keeper Samantha Bird.
Mobile held an 8-5 edge in shots in the opening half . The Lady Rams continued to apply pressure in the second half, and it paid off when Missy Stovall took a feed from Lachappelle and put Mobile up 2-1 in the 71st minute. Just when it looked like Mobile would pull out a 2-1 win, Brenau's Tori Futrell knocked home a free kick from about 25 yards out to tie the game in the 81st minute. From there, neither team could do anything.
Mobile (0-0-1) travels to Hattiesburg, MS to play Warner Southern University Saturday, Aug. 29 at 5 pm.
