MOBILE, Ala-- The University of Mobile baseball team finished out its 2010 home schedule by dropping a doubleheader to Lambuth University Sunday. Lambuth won the opener 12-0 in five innings and took the finale 6-5 in nine innings.
Mobile (20-29, 13-18) will close out the regular season at LSU-Shreveport with a three-game conference series beginning Friday at 6:30 pm.
The finale was scheduled to go seven innings, but the Rams rallied with two runs in the bottom of the 6th to force extras, before Lambuth won it with a pair in the 9th.
Zachary Hurdt picked up the win for the Eagles with 2 innings of perfect relief, while Dustin Lee was tagged with the loss for Mobile after giving up one earned run in 3.1 innings of relief work.
Mike Davis and Bart White each drove in two runs for Lambuth, whle Mitchell Thomson went 2-2 at the plate. Hunter Norris went 2-4 for Mobile, while Justin Beck, Ben Negus and Brad Sheffield each finished 2-5.
Norris doubled home Sheffield to give Mobile a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning, but the Eagles put up two runs in each of the 2nd and 3rd frames to take a 4-1 lead.
The Rams scratched across a run in the 4th on Negus' RBI-single, but the team left eight runners on through the first four innings to trail 4-2. Things stayed that way until the 6th when Jake Halverson reached on an infield single and Beck doubled to put runners at 2nd and 3rd. With two outs, Sheffield singled home Halverson, and during the next at-bat Beck scored on a defensive miscue from Lambuth.
A leadoff walk and error set Lambuth up with runners at 2nd and 3rd in the top of the 9th and Bart White delivered a 2-run single for the winning tallies.
Mobile made a run at it in the bottom of the 9th as Nick Laico singled home Negus to make it 6-5, but the Rams could not push across another run, leaving the bases loaded.
The Lambuth University Eagles pounded out 14 hits in the opener. Mike Davis finished 3-4 with 3 RBI and a home run, Mitchell Thomson finished 3-4 with 2 RBI, Bart White finished 2-4 with a homer and Matt Bird finished 2-3 at the plate for the Eagles.
Lambuth's Brent Ebinger limited the Rams to five hits in 5 innings of shutout ball, while striking out five to pick up the win. Justin Beck finished 3-3 at the plate for Mobile with a double and a triple.
Chris Peacock took the loss for Mobile after giving up 6 earned runs on 8 hits in 2 innings of work.
After a walk and a strike out in the 1st inning, Davis hit a 2-run shot for the Eagles and then White followed with a solo bomb for the 3-0 lead. Lambuth then scored nine runs over the next two frames, sending nine hitters to the plate in each inning, with nine combined hits.
Four of the five runs in the 2nd were unearned, while three extra-base hits in the 3rd keyed a four-run outburst.
