SHREVEPORT, La-- The 12th-ranked LSU-Shreveport Pilots took a Gulf Coast Athletic Conference twin bill from the University of Mobile baseball team by scores of 5-4 and 18-1 Friday.
Mobile (20-31, 13-20) and LSUS (41-10, 24-7) finish the series with an 11 am contest Saturday. Next up will be the GCAC Tournament at Smith-Wills Stadium in Ridgeland, Miss. May 5-10.
John James went the distance in the opener for the Pilots to pick up the win. He struck out five and allowed four earned runs on seven hits. John Ladnier took the loss for Mobile after giving up one earned run on one hit in 1.1 innings of relief work.
Cody Barber finished 2-3 with a home run for Mobile, while Michael Tedesco finished 1-2 with a homer. Chase Wentz, Shawn Moy and David Morgan each finished 2-3 at the plate for LSU-Shreveport.
The Pilots took a 3-1 lead after four innings of the seven-inning contest, and then the teams went back-and-forth from there.
Mobile tallied single runs in the final three innings to tie it up 4-4 heading into the bottom of the 7th. Cody Sanderson doubled home Hunter Norris in the 5th, Brad Sheffield produced a RBI-single in the 6th and Tedesco popped a solo homer in the 7th to tie it up for Mobile.
But, in the bottom of the 7th, Andrew Blubaugh hit a one-out triple for the Pilots and after a pair of intentional walks to load the bases, Chase Wentz was hit by a pitch to force home the winning run.
In the final game Friday, LSUS scored 18 runs on 21 hits to run-rule Mobile in 7 innings. The Pilots scored at least two runs in every inning but the 4th, including seven in the 5th and five in the 6th.
Brandon Bravata went 3-4 with 4 RBI and a homer, Kevin Smith finished 2-3 with 3 RBI and a homer, David Morgan finished 2-3 with 3 RBI and a home and Matt Bagley added 3 hits for the Pilots.
Justin Beck and Brad Sheffield each finished 2-3 for Mobile.
