RIDGELAND, Miss-- The 12th-ranked LSU-Shreveport Pilots topped the University of Mobile 10-4 at the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference baseball tournament Thursday.
Mobile (20-33) will face the Belhaven - Loyola loser Friday, May 7 at 11 am in an elimination game.
Justin Ennis (10-0) got the win for the Pilots after scattering 10 hits over 7 innings, while limiting Mobile to 4 runs. Chris Peacock (6-6) took the loss for Mobile after giving up 8 earned runs on 8 hits in 5.2 innings of work.
Justin Beck reached base four times at the top of the Mobile lineup, Nick Laico finished 3-4 with 1 RBI, Bradh Sheffield added 2 RBI, and Hunter Norris and Derek Bourgeois each finished 2-4 at the plate for Mobile.
Brandon Bravata and Andrew Blubaugh each collected two hits and scored three runs from the top two spots of the LSUS order, while Chase Wentz drove in a pair.
The game started off well for Mobile, as the Rams plated two runs in the top of the 1st. Justin Beck rallied from a 0-2 count to rip a leadoff single, and then Nick Laico went opposite field for a double to put runners at 2nd and 3rd. Brad Sheffield produced a RBI-groundout and Cody Sanderson had a RBI-single, but LSUS starter Justin Ennis induced a double-play ball to end the threat.
But, the Pilots tied it up in the bottom of the inning after the first two hitters reached without a hit. Kevin Smith and Chase Wentz provided the run-scoring hits in the frame.
Mobile starter Chris Peacock rallied with a 1-2-3 inning in the 2nd, but the Pilots took a commanding 7-2 lead with three in the 3rd and two in the 4th. The first three Pilots reached in the 3rd, with Andrew Brouillette singling home the first run, and a sac fly and error accounting for two more. A double, triple, error and wild pitch pushed home two more Pilot runs in the 4th and put Mobile behind 7-2.
The Rams loaded the bases with one out in the 5th, but Ennis again got a double-play ball to prevent any damage.
