No. 10 Blazers End Rams' Season At GCAC Tournament

RIDGELAND, Miss-- Last year, Belhaven faced Mobile for the 2009 GCAC Baseball Tournament Championship, but this year it was an elimination game on day two of the 2010 tournament, and the Rams fell to the 10th-ranked Blazers 14-9.

Belhaven (40-14) stays alive, while the Rams finish the season with a 20-34 overall record.

The Blazers jumped out to a 9-0 lead after 3.5 innings of work, and the Rams rallied to tie it up 9-9. But, the Belhaven bats stayed hot through the 6, 7 and 8th innings and Paul Faulkenberry held down the Mobile bats in relief to grab the win.

Extra-base hits would be a theme all day for the Blazers, and that is how they started the scoring, using a pair of doubles and a 2-run homer from Jimmy Gilford to take a 3-0 lead in the 3rd. In the 4th, the Blazers batted around to chase Mobile starter Jarrin Brister, getting a 2-run triple from Shawn Diehl and RBI-hits from Jordan Brewer and Timmy Foster to go ahead 9-0.

What seemed like a lost cause for the Rams quickly turned into a new ball game over the next two turns at bat. The first four Rams reached in the 4th and Mobile plated three, highlighted by Cody Sanderson's 2-run single.

Mobile then knotted the game in the 5th with a six-spot of their own as the team batted around with six hits, including four extra-base hits. Justin Beck started the frame with a triple and Hunter Norris and Cody Barber added 2-run doubles, with Barber's hit tying it up.

Reliever Jeff Lyons turned in a 1-2-3 inning for the Rams in the top of the 5th to keep it 9-9, but after that, the Blazers went to work against the Mobile bullpen, using six extra-base hits between the 6, 7 and 8th innings to plate five runs. Belhaven started each of the 6th and 8th innings with back-to-back doubles and scored two in each frame. Gilford's RBI-double in the 6th proved to be the game-winner.

Mobile loaded the bases in the 9th against reliever Wade Broyles, but left them loaded.

Jeff Lyons took the loss for Mobile after allowing 4 earned runs on 6 hits in 2.2 innings of relief. Paul Faulkenberry picked up the win by limiting Mobile to 1 run on 4 hits in 3.2 innings of relief, while fanning 5.

Drew Dillard finished 3-6 with 3 runs, Jimmy Gilford finished 2-5 with 3 RBI, Timmy Foster went 3-5 with 3 RBI and both Kyle Feazell and Jordan Brewer added 2 hits for the Blazers.

Nick Laico finished 3-5 for Mobile, Cody Sanderson went 3-4 with 2 RBI and Cody Barber and Hunter Norris each added 2 hits and 2 RBI. Justin Beck. Travis Williamson and Michael Tedesco added a pair of hits each for Mobile.
