MOBILE, Ala-- A pair of first-half goals propelled the University of Mobile men's soccer team to a season-opening 3-1 win over 18th-ranked Bethel College Thursday evening at the University of Mobile.
The Rams controlled the tempo in the opening 45 minutes, outshooting the visitors 7-1 and putting 3 shots on target. Newcomer Deshorn Brown got the scoring started in the 17th minute when he knocked home a rebound after Chris Dillon's header was stopped by Cody Troyer.
Ten minutes later, Brown's long pass led Marc Joseph past the Bethel defense, and Joseph went far post to beat the goalkeeper as Mobile went into the half up 2-0.
Mobile kept the pressure up in the 2nd half, taking 11 more shots. Ruben Diaz finished the Mobile scoring with an unassisted goal in the 72nd minute when he danced into the corner of the 18-yard box and fired the ball into the back of the net.
Joao Couto provided Bethel's lone goal, scoring from point-blank range in the 71st minute off assists from Drew Carpenter and Zach Ganzberg.
Mobile (1-0) next plays Sept. 3 at the AUM Tournament in Montgomery, Ala., against Martin Methodist at 12 pm.
