
MONTGOMERY, Ala-- The University of Mobile volleyball team jumped ahead 2-0, but fell 2-3 (25-22, 25-23, 10-25, 23-25, 12-15) to Shorter University on the final day of the SSAC Cross-Over.
Mobile moves to 2-2 on the season, while Shorter improves to 7-1. The Lady Rams visit Southern University at New Orleans Tuesday, Sept. 14 at 7 pm.
Alyson Kovacs again led the way offensively for the Lady Rams with an impressive 18 kills and .342 attack percentage, while Kelly Sherling added 15 kills and Christa Hicks chipped in with a double-double of 12 kills and 11 digs.
Katy McCollister and Charlotte Stutts led the way defensviely, with 22 and 15 digs, respectively. Melody Tenney led with 36 assists and 3 aces, while Kaylee McGrew finished with 19 assists and 7 digs.
Ashley Walton and Ashlie Stewartson led Shorter with 15 and 12 kills, respectively, while Jordan Corder finished with 44 assists and 12 digs. Shorter out-hit Mobile .209 to .133 as a team and outblocked the Lady Rams 9 to 4.
Mobile was able to run out to an 8-3 lead in the opening set and then rebound after Shorter rallied to take a 20-19 lead late. A pair of kills from Sherling and a pair of Shorter attack errors down the stretch gave Mobile a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Rams played from behind for the first half of set no. 2, but rallied to take the 2-0 lead. Shorter led 15-14, but Mobile reeled off four straight points thanks from kills by Kovacs and Hicks to take an 18-15 lead. From there, Mobile held on despite a pair of late errors, as a Kovacs kill finished the set.
Set no. 3 was all Shorter as the Lady Hawks built a 14-4 lead and never looked back. The 4th set saw a key Shorter run in the middle of the action tie it 2-2. The Lady Rams were up 13-10, but Shorter answered with a 7-0 run to go ahead 17-13. Mobile pulled within 24-23 late, but Shorter won a long final point to tie it up.
Mobile led 2-1 in the final set, but errors helped Shorter rebound for a 7-3 lead and they never looked back.
