UM Topples Crusaders For GCAC Title

HATTIESBURG, Miss-- The University of Mobile men's soccer team upset No. 9 William Carey University 4-0 to win the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament Thursday evening.

 

Mobile (8-10) will host Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Champ Asbury College Saturday, Nov. 14 at 6 pm, with the winner gaining a bid to the 2009 NAIA National Tournament.
 
After a scoreless first half, that saw the Rams have few chances, Mobile came out and forced the issue in the final 45 to take control.
 
In the 50th minute, Sam Blackburn took a long feed off the head of Ruben Diaz, took a touch inside the 18-yard box and went far post for the 1-0 lead.
 
The Rams kept controlling the tempo and 12 minutes later, Ruben Diaz took a defensive giveaway in the box and knocked it home for a 2-0 lead. In the 79th minute, Onesimus Ikungo took a long pass from Saulo Litterio, beat a pair of defenders with fancy footwork and drilled it past the keeper.
 
Diaz added his second goal of the game with 7 seconds remaining when he took a feed from Eoin Dolan and ripped a shot into the box off a WCU defender, past the keeper.
 
It is the second straight year that Mobile won the GCAC Tournament Championship.
