MONTGOMERY, Ala-- The University of Mobile volleyball team dropped Saturday's opener at the Faulkner University Invitational 0-3 (18-25, 23-25, 23-25) to Southeastern University.
Mobile (10-7) will face Florida Memorial today at 3 pm to finish out the tournament.
Kelly Sherling led the Lady Rams with 15 kills and added 13 digs, while Shea McBee with .409 and finished with 11 kills. Katie Dowd hit .500 and added 8 kills to the Mobile attack, while Katy McCollister led with 17 digs. Melody Tenney and Kaylee McGrew finished with 22 and 19 assists, respectively.
Mobile finished a 47-34 advantage in kills and 54-48 advantage in digs, but Southeastern out hit Mobile .273 to .203 and finished with a 10-0 advantage in blocks. The Lady Fire also finished with an 8-4 advantage in service aces.
In the opening set, Southeastern led much of the way, but Mobile pulled within 19-18 late on Dowd's kill. But, the Lady Fire took the set by finishing with a 6-0 run thanks to 3 aces.
The teams traded leads early in the second set, but the Lady Fire broke a 12-12 tie with a 5-0 run. Mobile battled back to tie it up at 19-19 and the teams traded points until Southeastern took the final two points for the win.
Mobile got off to a nice start in the final set, taking a 15-11 lead with a 6-2 run, capped by back-to-back aces from McGrew. But, Southeastern answered right back with a 7-1 run to take an 18-16 lead. The Lady Rams kept evening the score, but could not take the lead the rest of the way.
